In a poignant return, Indian actress Nushrratt Bharuccha arrived in her homeland on a somber Sunday afternoon, her departure from Israel necessitated by the turbulent events orchestrated by Hamas militants. Clad in casual attire, the weary 38-year-old artist emerged from the bustling confines of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport around 2.30 pm.
Almost on the verge of tears, Bharuccha implored the multitude of media personnel, assembled in vast numbers outside the airport, for a moment of respite. “Mujhe thoda waqt dijiye (Please grant me some time),” she beseeched the reporters, her plea echoing in the air, as security personnel gently guided her towards her waiting car.
Renowned for her roles in the “Pyaar Ka Punchnama” series, “Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety,” and “Chhorii,” Bharuccha had journeyed to Israel to grace the Haifa International Film Festival, an event spanning from September 28 to October 7.
Earlier in the day, Bharuccha’s publicist had affirmed her safety, conveying that she was en route to India. However, the day had commenced with an unsettling absence of communication from the actor’s camp. This silence, a consequence of a surprise offensive by Hamas militants hailing from the Gaza Strip, struck at the break of dawn. The assault claimed the lives of at least 22 Israelis, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare “war” and vow an “unprecedented price” from the aggressors.
Bharuccha’s most recent cinematic appearance was in “Akelli,” a gripping thriller chronicling the plight of an ordinary Indian woman ensnared within a combat zone. Her return, marked by the gravity of recent events, cast a shadow over the usually joyous realm of film festivals.
