Priyanka Chopra Targeted by Deepfake Video

A new deepfake video featuring Priyanka Chopra has surfaced online, adding to the growing list of celebrities targeted by this technology. In the video, Chopra’s voice and words are manipulated to create a fake brand endorsement, raising concerns about the spread of misinformation and potential harm to individuals.

Unlike previous cases involving actresses like Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, and Rashmika Mandanna, whose faces were edited onto controversial content, Chopra’s deepfake video utilizes her voice and audio from a different source. This highlights the increasing sophistication of deepfake technology and its ability to create believable and potentially damaging content.

This incident comes amidst efforts by the Indian government to tackle the rise of deepfakes. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar recently met with social media platforms, demanding stricter measures to combat misinformation and deepfakes. The government has issued advisories to these platforms and is actively considering amendments to IT rules to enhance user safety and trust.

Chandrasekhar emphasized that there are legal consequences for platforms failing to address user harm caused by misinformation and deepfakes, including prosecution under existing laws. He acknowledged that some platforms have complied with the government’s directives, while others have been granted additional time. However, the government remains firm in its stance against user harm and will continue its “zero tolerance approach” towards this issue.

Deepfakes, which are synthetic media manipulated to misrepresent individuals, pose a significant threat due to their ability to create convincing and deceptive content. This incident involving Priyanka Chopra underscores the urgency for robust regulatory measures and increased awareness about the dangers of deepfakes.
