Popular Kapamilya comedian and host, Melai Cantiveros, unexpectedly drew the attention of Korean heartthrob Kim Seon Ho during the Asia Artist Awards 2023 (AAA). The event, held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Thursday, December 14, 2023, saw Melai among the local celebrities invited to the VIP section, seated alongside K-celebs who were also receiving awards that evening.
The memorable incident occurred right after New Jeans was awarded the Hot Trend title for AAA 2023. The host had been interviewing nominees such as Kim Seon Ho from Home Town Cha Cha Cha, Lee Jun Ho from King The Land, EXO’s Suho, and Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi from The Last 10 Years.
Making her way to Melai, seated behind Kim Seon Ho, Lee Jun Ho, Suho, and Kentaro, the host asked, “How do you feel about attending the AAA?”

Melai, filled with excitement, stood up and cheerfully exclaimed, “annyeonghaseyo” (hello in Korean) and “arigato gozaimasu” (thank you in Japanese). With her trademark wit, she replied in broken English, “I feel like I am the first honor, a valedictorian in attending an AAA. So the best, prestigious award. I cannot believe this happening!”
The host inquired further, “With many artists representing Asia today, is there anyone you’d particularly like to meet?”

Melai seized the opportunity to express her overwhelming excitement at being seated near her idol, Kim Seon Ho. “Magandang buhay, maayong hapon na mga taga-Gen San, Pilipinas! Uhm, I want, I’m so very idol, Kim Seon Ho!” She couldn’t contain her enthusiasm, making wacky faces and gestures as if she were melting with excitement over the chance to meet him. Cameras captured Kim Seon Ho’s reaction, turning to smile at Melai.
Adding to her wish list, Melai mentioned her desire to meet the K-pop girl group NewJeans, explaining, “because my daughter loves NewJeans.”
Amidst the laughter and cheers from the audience, Melai’s funny interview at the Philippine Arena became the highlight of the evening.
