The upcoming Niu XQi3 Electric Dirtbike is set to arrive in Europe in the spring of 2024, expanding the market for enthusiast-focused electric two-wheelers. Unveiled at EICMA 2023, Niu’s first electric dual-sport bike will be offered in two versions: the off-road-only Wild and the street-legal Street.
For European riders, the Street variant will be classified as a moped, requiring either a car license or an A1 license depending on the region. The XQi3 is equipped with a mid-drive motor, featuring a chain final-drive that delivers a claimed eight kilowatts (approximately 10.7 horsepower) to the rear wheel.
The Street model is limited to a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour (28 miles per hour), while the Wild version boasts an Ultra-Boost feature that unlocks a top speed of 75 kilometers per hour (46.6 miles per hour). The motor is strategically placed at the bottom of the aluminum frame, ensuring a low center of gravity for enhanced maneuverability.
In terms of range, the XQi3 incorporates a removable LG 72-volt, 32-amp-hour battery, offering around 80 to 90 kilometers (49 to 55 miles) on a single charge. The bike features lightweight components, blurring the line between e-moto and e-MTB, with long-travel suspension, 19-inch spoked wheels with knobby tires, and front and rear disc brakes (220 mm and 203 mm, respectively).
Beyond performance, the Niu XQi3 boasts a range of tech features typical of Niu’s offerings. It includes full-LED lighting, a TFT display with smartphone connectivity and NFC unlocking, USB-C charger, and GPS navigation. The Street version adds turn signals, rear-view mirrors, and a license plate holder.
Scheduled to hit the European market with a retail price of 5,999 euros (approximately $6,574 USD), the Niu XQi3 will be available in various colors and graphics, allowing riders to choose a design that suits their personal style.
