Zeekr, the premium electric vehicle brand under the Chinese automaker Geely, has introduced an incredible new charging solution. This groundbreaking technology allows their electric cars to achieve a range of 500 kilometers after just 15 minutes of charging.
The unveiling took place at Geely Holding Group’s battery plant in Zhejiang province, showcasing Zeekr’s dedication to innovation in the electric vehicle sector.
What makes this rapid charging possible is Zeekr’s use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. By adopting these advanced batteries, Zeekr aims to reduce reliance on external suppliers for crucial electric vehicle components, thus gaining a competitive edge in the market. The upcoming 007 sedan from Zeekr will be the pioneer model to showcase these batteries, boasting an impressive 500 km (300 miles) driving range achievable within just 15 minutes of charging, operating at an 800-voltage level.
This strategic move aligns with Zeekr’s goal of self-sufficiency in the electric vehicle market, a trend seen across various manufacturers. For instance, Zeekr’s competitor, Nio, plans to manage costs effectively by separating its battery production unit.
Previously, Zeekr depended on nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries from CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, to power its 001 crossover and 009 multipurpose vehicles. However, the introduction of the new LFP batteries marks a significant step toward faster charging times and extended driving ranges.
CATL, on the other hand, has also made significant progress in fast-charging capabilities for electric vehicles. Their introduction of fast-charging batteries for Li Auto’s first pure electric MPV MEGA enables a 500 km (300 miles) driving range with just a 12-minute charging time. This highlights the growing emphasis on fast-charging capabilities in the electric vehicle industry.
Zeekr’s latest innovation signifies a substantial leap in charging technology within the electric vehicle market. As companies like Zeekr and Nio continue to enhance self-sufficiency and improve charging times, consumers can anticipate more efficient and convenient electric vehicles in the near future.
