In October 2023, they introduced the HySE-X1, a pioneering hydrogen-fueled four-wheeled vehicle slated to participate in the Mission 1000 program at the 2024 Dakar Rally. This creation marked the debut project of HySE, a collaborative team formed by Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, Toyota, and Yamaha, focused on advancing hydrogen engine technology.
Fast forward to mid-December 2023, and the 2024 Dakar Rally is on the horizon. While the HySE-X1 promises excitement, imagine the anticipation if Kawasaki showcased a hydrogen engine motorcycle.
Fortunately, Kawasaki Heavy Industries encompasses various sectors. As all these segments are actively working towards achieving collective carbon neutrality goals, they periodically conduct group meetings to share progress reports.
On December 12, 2023, Kawasaki Heavy Industries hosted its Group Vision 2030 Progress Report Meeting, which was also streamed on its YouTube channel, albeit entirely in Japanese.

Updates were provided by key figures like Kawasaki Motors Company Limited president and CEO Hiroshi Ito, Aerospace Systems Company senior managing executive officer Hiroyoshi Shimokawa, Energy Solutions and Marine Engineering Company senior managing executive officer Motohiko Nishimura, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited president and CEO Yasuhiko Hashimoto.
The highlight, understandably, was the update from Kawasaki Motor Co. president and CEO Hiroshi Ito. He outlined recent developments, including the launches of the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 battery electric motorcycles, along with the subsequent announcements of the Ninja 7 HEV and Z 7 HEV.
Given that four out of the five HySE companies are major motorcycle manufacturers in Japan, it was only a matter of time before a hydrogen engine motorcycle emerged. And finally, during the Kawasaki presentation on December 12, 2023, we got a sneak peek at it.
President Ito revealed that it’s based on the Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX, sporting a design diverging from Team Green’s traditional colors, opting instead for soothing shades of blue seen in the HySE logo and the HySE-X1 vehicle for Dakar 2024.
However, specific details about the prototype were scant. Although the video showcased a test rider demonstrating the Ninja 7 Hybrid’s Walk function and the Hybrid Engine Motorcycle prototype, there wasn’t even a brief clip of a startup.
President Ito mentioned that testing would commence soon with this prototype, possibly explaining why a startup wasn’t attempted during the recorded session.
