In contrast to Europe, the variety of higher-speed seated electric scooters available in the US has been quite limited. However, there’s exciting news as more models are gradually making their way into the North American market. The most recent addition hitting the roads in the US is the CSC ES5 electric scooter, currently being shipped to reservation holders and open for orders.
Unveiled earlier this summer, this commuter scooter is now being delivered nationwide by CSC, a California-based dealer.
With a top speed of 53 mph (85 km/h), the CSC ES5 boasts a sleek and tech-forward design, presenting an excellent choice for Americans seeking an upgrade from e-bikes without transitioning to a full-size electric motorcycle.
Sitting between lighter and heavy-duty electric two-wheelers, this scooter offers a classic step-through design, ideal for utility and commuting purposes, especially for riders preferring a more relaxed riding posture.
Powered by a 5 kW continuous rated and 8 kW peak-rated centrally mounted motor, this zippy scooter is equipped with three 60V and 31Ah lithium-ion batteries, providing a total capacity of 5.58 kWh. These removable batteries suit riders living in apartments or lacking street-level charging points, allowing convenient indoor charging.
According to CSC, the scooter delivers a range of around 68 miles (110 km) at a steady 31 mph (50 km/h). Importantly, CSC’s performance estimations tend to be realistic, often slightly lower than real-world achievements. This departure from exaggerated industry standards offers a more accurate portrayal of the scooter’s capabilities.
While consistent cruising at the scooter’s top speed of 53 mph may not yield the full 68-mile range, it’s practical for most city commutes.
Priced at US $4,995 during a sale (reduced from an MSRP of US $5,295, excluding $410 in dealer fees), the CSC ES5 stands out as a reasonably priced option among the limited electric scooter offerings in the US. It’s even cheaper than many electric bicycles.
Comparatively, the closest rival, the NIU MQi Sport Extended Range, priced at US $6,199, offers a top speed of 43 mph (70 km/h), a 3.1 kW motor power, and a 4.03 kWh battery capacity. Essentially, for a 15% higher cost, the NIU provides 20% less speed, 28% less battery, and 38% less power. Despite NIU’s potential advantages in support due to its larger size, CSC also boasts excellent support and maintains a substantial inventory of spare parts.
While lacking certain features like GPS-tracking, the ES5 compensates with its own impressive attributes such as keyless start, a full-color TFT instrument display, Bluetooth audio player, and a built-in dash camera for recording rides, catering to both historical and legal purposes.
Additionally, the ES5 accommodates two riders with pillion pegs and rear grab bars.
Although I haven’t had the opportunity to test this particular model yet, my previous experiences with CSC electric motorcycles and scooters have left a positive impression, giving me high expectations for the ES5.
